After a spell racing in the one-person Europe dinghy Olympic class, she switched to the three-woman Yngling class to represent the Netherlands at the 2004 Olympics in Greece – and four years later she won an Olympic silver medal in the women’s match racing at the 2008 Beijing Games. After a third Olympic appearance at London 2012, Annemieke turned her attention to another long-time goal – the Volvo Ocean Race. Photo by Ainhoa Sanchez/Volvo Ocean Race

    • Brad Farrand. Team AkzoNobel. Although racing in his first Volvo Ocean Race, Brad brings plenty of professional campaign experience from the Extreme Sailing Series and World Match Racing Tour, along with bucket loads of energy and enthusiasm. He was first introduced to sailing as a child by his parents and has since established himself as one of the professional sailing world’s top prospects.

    • Emily Nagel. Team AkzoNobel. Emily has raced for Britain at European and World Championships level. In 2015, she led an otherwise all-male British University Sailing Association team to victory on a tour of the USA – and later joined Team BDA, the Bermudan entry in the Youth America's Cup. In 2016, she raced an F4 foiling catamaran from New York to Bermuda as part of a crew led by Jimmy Spithill. She later worked for Softbank Team Japan in the design department – which is where she first met AkzoNobel skipper Simeon.

    • Jules Salter. Team AkzoNobel. Universally recognised as one of the world’s best racing navigators, Jules was born on the Isle of Wight and grew up racing on the capricious waters of the Solent. Inspired by the teams from around the world who came to Cowes for premiere events like the Whitbread Race and Admiral’s Cup, he soon became a familiar face on the international yacht racing scene. Jules has three Volvo Ocean Races to his name, including a win in 2008-09 with Ericsson Racing sailing with Brad and Joca. This will be his first race around the world in identical one-design boats – a welcome new challenge that he believes will make the race all the more exciting. • Martine Grael. Team AkzoNobel. Martine lines up for her first Volvo Ocean Race having made her name on the Olympic circuit – and in 2016, she took gold in her home Olympic Games in Rio, clinching the win alongside sailing partner Kahena Kunze in front of thousands of fans in Guanabara Bay. Although this is her first time competing in the Volvo Ocean Race, she's no stranger to the event. Her father, Torben Grael – as well as being Brazil’s most successful Olympic sailor, with five medals – has taken part in the race three times, and won the 2008-09 edition as skipper of Ericsson 4.

    • Nicolai Sehested. Team AkzoNobel. As a young Optimist sailor, Nicolai once made a pact with his mum and dad to never take part in the Volvo Ocean Race in exchange for a brand new boat that season. Now taking part in his second race around the world (after competing onboard Team Vestas Wind in 2014-15), he says his parents have forgiven him for twice breaking his word. Best known as a skipper on the fast-paced World Match Racing Tour, Nicolai admits to being an unashamed speed freak out on the ocean. Previous Volvo Ocean Race: 2014-15 Team Vestas Wind
